SAN ANTONIO, Texas — July 17, 2025 — Flix Brewhouse San Antonio, Texas’ cinema brewery, proved its brewing excellence on a national stage, earning five medals at the 2025 U.S. Open Beer Championship and playing a key role in the company’s historic achievement of 16 medals overall—the highest medal count of any company in the country.
The U.S. Open Beer Championship is one of the nation’s most competitive beer competitions, attracting thousands of entries from craft breweries of all sizes. While this year’s Grand National Champion earned six medals, Flix Brewhouse collectively brought home 16, setting a new benchmark for brewery groups.
Flix Brewhouse locations are judged as independent breweries, making the San Antonio team’s success even more noteworthy. Local brewers captured two gold, two silver, and one bronze medal, underscoring the quality, consistency, and creativity coming out of their on-site brewery.
San Antonio’s 2025 medal-winning beers included:
-
🥇 Shadowhorn (Weizenbock) – Gold Medal
-
🥈 Lucha Libre (Mexican Lager) – Silver Medal
-
🥈 Balrog’s Bock (Strong Bock) – Silver Medal
-
🥉 Nakatomi Nights (Belgian Quadrupel) – Bronze Medal
Notably, Lucha Libre is one of Flix’s four core beers that are proudly brewed and served year-round at every Flix Brewhouse nationwide, meaning guests can enjoy an award-winning lager any day of the week.
Meet San Antonio’s Head Brewer
Robert Gonzalez leads San Antonio’s brew team with over a decade of experience. Known for his meticulous approach to traditional European styles, Robert has been instrumental in perfecting Shadowhorn and Balrog’s Bock. He emphasizes flavor balance and clarity, and brings that same careful attention to the famed Lucha Libre lager.
“Winning even a single medal at the U.S. Open Beer Championship is a tremendous honor, but to walk away with five here in San Antonio—and 16 across the company—is nothing short of astounding,” said David Meillier, Vice President of Store Operations. “It’s a humbling moment that reflects the immense talent, creativity, and dedication of our brewing team. Under the guidance of Josh Miller, our National Brewery Operations Manager, they’ve exceeded every expectation. Not too bad for a movie theater that brews beer!”
Setting a New Standard for Brewery Groups Nationwide
Flix Brewhouse is the world’s only first-run cinema brewery, combining the best of two worlds—award-winning craft beer brewed on-site and a full-service cinema experience. With locations across Texas, New Mexico, Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Oklahoma, Flix operates as a collection of unique, local breweries while maintaining a commitment to consistency and quality.
“Quality has always been at the heart of everything we do,” said Josh Miller, National Brewery Operations Manager. “This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our brewers and their commitment to delivering something exceptional to our guests. There’s nowhere else in the world you can enjoy this level of craft on tap while watching a movie. It’s what truly puts the ‘Brewhouse’ in Flix Brewhouse.”
Award-Winning Beer, Available Every Day
Alongside San Antonio’s standout beers, two other Flix core beers—10 Day Scottish Ale and Luna Rosa Raspberry Wheat—also earned medals at other locations. These flagship beers remain staples on the tap list, offering guests across the country a chance to enjoy nationally recognized brews anytime.
